Chapter 3: Unrequited Love is a Sickness
Undeniably, Jian Xin liked Hua Chen from the moment she first saw him. Of course, at that time, she didn't know he was the heir of the Hua Corporation.
It was at a stylish French restaurant in the city. Jian Xin was tapping on the table impatiently while waiting for her date. When she turned her head, she saw Hua Chen sitting by the window. He was wearing a custom-tailored gray suit that fit him perfectly, with the collar of his shirt slightly open.
Formal attire always gave men a sense of restrained charm, but when the collar of the shirt was slightly undone, the charm of restraint transformed into a lazy allure. Jian Xin gazed at the elegant and refined man and instantly fell for him. Acting on impulse, she approached him to strike up a conversation.
"I'm waiting for someone," he looked up, a playful smile in his eyes. "Miss, it's not appropriate to approach someone like this."
"Just getting acquainted," she felt a bit embarrassed, but her mouth was strong. "They say this is the main way people socialize in the future."
He raised an eyebrow, glanced at her, and then stood up, asking the waiter to change to a different private room. Jian Xin's attempt to strike up a conversation predictably ended in failure.
Although Jian Xin didn't like to dress up, she had a good foundation and could be considered a beauty. She had been approached by many boys since childhood. She had always politely smiled, but she had never encountered such a big nail like Hua Chen. She regretted it for a while until she met Hua Chen again.
It was at a friend's birthday party, and she was bored wandering around when she bumped into Hua Chen making a phone call on the terrace.
"Hello," after he finished the call, she hesitated internally but still mustered the courage to approach him. Seeing that he didn't recognize her, she swallowed the prepared words at the corner of her mouth and asked, "Can I borrow your phone for a moment?"
"There's a phone downstairs," he looked at her and replied politely.
This response was much better than Jian Xin expected, so she pointed to her slender and tall high-heeled shoes and continued, "I have something urgent to find someone, and going up and down the stairs is not very convenient..."
There was silence, and when she felt the awkwardness almost unbearable, the black Vertu phone suddenly appeared in front of her. She eagerly took it, dialed her own number, and after a while, pretended to be disappointed as she handed the phone back to Hua Chen, saying, "Thank you, but the call couldn't go through."
"Really? If you don't answer the phone, how could it go through?"
Hua Chen looked at her as if watching a show. It was then that Jian Xin noticed her handbag was shining intermittently... Damn, the screen was too bright. In her embarrassment, Jian Xin couldn't come up with any explanation and could only confess, "Actually, I wanted to ask for your phone number... Haha, you saw through it..."
He raised an eyebrow, "I'm not accustomed to giving my phone number to strangers..."
"I agree, how can one be accustomed to such a thing," she nodded in agreement, "just this once, not as a precedent."
After saying that, she quickly slipped away, wearing her eight-centimeter high heels.
Later, Jian Xin sent many messages to Hua Chen with the phone number she obtained, but she never received a reply. One day, when she finally gathered the courage to make a phone call, she found out that the number was already disconnected.
Later on, Jian Xin learned about Hua Chen's identity. She thought that someone like Hua Chen probably had many work numbers, and the one she obtained was most likely canceled. Thinking this way, Jian Xin deleted that number from her phone. However, every time she saw Hua Chen accompanied by socialites and actresses, Jian Xin couldn't help but feel a pang of sadness (why just a pang? Because Hua Chen changed girlfriends in waves). In the midst of this torment, fate finally smiled upon Jian Xin. Hua Chen's only female assistant got married and had a child, and they couldn't find a suitable replacement. So, the company transferred Jian Xin to fill the position.
Although the day-to-day scheduling and work assistance were handled by the experienced Jeff, Jian Xin was no longer just a gofer. As time went by, she also became acquainted with Hua Chen.
"Have we met somewhere before?" one day, Hua Chen stared at Jian Xin and suddenly asked.
Jian Xin's hand, holding the coffee, trembled, almost spilling it on the floor. She turned back, forced a smile, and looked at Hua Chen, "General Manager, I have a pretty ordinary face."
"Is that so?" Hua Chen curved his lips and suddenly took out the same black Vertu phone as before. Jian Xin put down her coffee, about to touch her own phone, but then she heard a cheerful ringtone coming from the quiet office...
